Rene Marchildon and his dog sled teamcompleted a grueling slog that included rain followed bynear-blizzard conditions to win the 250-mile Can-Am Crown acrossnorthern Maine. Marchildon, of Ontario, and three other mushers took a breaknine miles from the finish to let their dogs rest and to dig intoemergency rations before completing the race late Monday afternoon. He finished less than a minute ahead of Andre Longchamps ofQuebec, followed by Jamie Nelson of Togo, Minn. Four-time winnerMartin Massicotte of St. Tite, Quebec, took fourth. Rain and blizzard conditions forced more than half of the 23starters out of the race, which began Saturday in Fort Kent. Threeteams gave up 17 miles short of the finish Monday and were hauledout by snowmobiles and trucks.
