Local Couple Battles Cancer with Positive Outlook

The community is coming together for a local couple that is battling cancer. This couple has a positive outlook and are more concerned with others than themselves.”It’s a great honor for me to be a part of this. I have been friends with Don and Dora for 15 years and I knew from the very first time that I met them that these people were going to be in my life for a long time.”Don and Dora Winslow are both battling cancer. Don retired as Bangor’s Police Chief in 2007 after twenty-eight years on the force. In November Dora was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Three weeks later, Don was diagnosed with neck cancer. But they don’t want anyone feeling sorry for them.”They’re more concerned about other people then they are about themselves. They’ve always been that way.”The Winslows say the outpouring of support has been overwhelming.”It’s been very humbling. We’ve been so blessed. The whole community has come together for us. We’re real fortunate that we have such a circle of friends and family.”They say they hope other people going through tough times are lucky enough to have the same kind of support.”It’s our mission to hopefully be able to help somebody else. Be able to make a difference in somebody else’s life and let them know that there is courage, strength and support out there for them as well.”A benefit spaghetti supper is being held and they are looking forward to having a good time with family and friends.”We want people to see the positive in this and to move forward. We all have our journeys, we all have our challenges. I firmly believe God doesn’t give us more than we can handle.”Even with their positive outlooks, they don’t deny the difficulties.”Certainly it’s been an emotional roller coaster. We have certainly laughed, we’ve certainly cried. We’ve done it all. It’s a learning curve.”But their sense of humor has stayed intact, joking that they think when this is all over with they deserve honorary medical degrees.”Our social calendar is now full of doctor appointments and blood work. I go for radiation every day. It’s just incredible the amount of time.”The spaghetti supper for Don and Dora will be held this Friday at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer. The dinner starts at 4 pm. There will also be live and silent auctions. The Bangor Police Department band will be playing seventies and eighties music for folks to dance to.Tickets are $15 and available by calling 944-4089.
