Investigators say there’s too much damage to figure out what started a fire that destroyed a home in Liberty.A passerby called in the fire on Trues Pond Road about 5:15 Tuesday morning. The homeowner was at work at the time. Chief Bill Gillespie says the weather made fighting the fire difficult. Crews had to drill through ice on the pond across the street to get to water and the roof on the house collapsed because of heavy snow. Ice also built up on the ground around the house. Gillespie says one firefighter was sent to the hospital for chest pains but checked out okay. Crews from Washington, Montville, Searsmont and Palermo also responded to the fire. We’re told the homeowner is insured.
