Jackson Lab to Create New Research Center in Florida 

Maine’s Jackson Laboratory and the University of South Florida plan to create a new research center in Florida’s Sarasota County.Jackson Lab-Florida will be about the size of a typical Wal-Mart.Its focus will be genetics-based treatments for heart disease, alzheimer’s and diabetes. In January, Jackson Lab and the University pulled the plug on a similar plan for a research center in Collier County.Jackson’s Chief Operating Officer Charles Hewett says the new location and partnerships are essential to making breakthrough discoveries.It will require public investments. Sarasota County officials say they’ll seek voter approval for the funds needed.
