Bowen Is LePage’s Choice For Education Commissioner

Governor LePage has made his choice for education commissioner, and it’s a man who turned the job down back in December. On Wednesday the Governor announced Steve Bowen is his nominee to head the Department of Education.Bowen is a former social studies teacher and served two terms as a state representative from Camden. Most recently Bowen has worked for the Maine Heritage Policy Center and he’s currently a senior adviser on Governor LePage’s staff. “We need to get schools on a new course,” Bowen said to reporters. “One that replaces an early 20th century industrial era model of schools that is built on a 19th century school calendar and replace it with a 21st century school system that responds first and foremost to the individual needs of the kids.”Bowen faces legislative confirmation before he can take over as the head of the Department of Education.
