Governor LePage Supports Proposal to Change Budget Timing

(AP)Governor Paul LePage supports a proposal to change the timing of Maine’s two year budget so it’ll be debated in the second year of a new legislature.Similar legislation was proposed in 2007 and 2009 by former Representative Henry Joy of Crystal. The new proposal comes from Rep. Bernard Ayotte of Caswell, who says the current process is flawed because the newly elected governor and lawmakers have to get to work right away on details of the state’s complicated budget. He says his proposal means lawmakers would no longer feel as rushed. They could spend their first year working on the budget and then vote on it in the second year.
