Rockland Dump Fire Continues

A fire at the Rockland dump just won’t go out.According to Rockland Fire Chief Charles Jordan, Jr. the fire was first noticed Friday afternoon. He says because the dump is like a big compost pile, it heats up, sparking the fire.On Saturday and Sunday, fire crews spent several hours peeling back compost and pouring water on the flames, but as of Wednesday, the fire is still going.Chief Jordan says they are now putting a gravel and clay fill over the area after watering it down, to try and keep oxygen off the flames. He says there is no risk of the fire spreading outside of the quarry, and so far, the smoke has not been significant enough to cause air quality issues.
