Verdict in the trial of Randall Hofland 

The verdict is in, in the trial of the man accused of holding a group of students hostage on Halloween 2008.Randall Hofland was found not guilty of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon on officer Jessica Danielson the night of the routine traffic stop.Hofland was also found not guilty of criminal restraint with a dangerous weapon on a male student at Stockton Springs Elementary School.But the jury found him guilty of the four other counts of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and guilty of all 22 counts of kidnapping.He was also found guilty of burglary from entering the school and guilty on 11 counts of criminal restraint with a dangerous weapon.In closing arguments, District Attorney, Geoff Rushlau said the case was about violent conduct and that the gun Hofland had on him had an impact on all the people who were in contact with it.Rushlau argued that Hofland was at the school for a purpose and that was to gather students and use them as a shield.He said that even though Hofland never pointed the gun at the children in the classroom he still caused a risk of injury to them.Hofland said he always had the gun in control so it would never be a risk.He said there were conflicts in some of the testimonies and that it’s all embellishments which unfortunately led to the charges against him.” When he had the children in the classroom and he was holding a gun and they couldn’t leave that had an impact on them emotionally.”” We will have to see what happens next week.”The trial will continue next week. The jurors will have to determine whether or not Hofland was insane at the time of the events.
