Maine Senate OKs Three Cabinet Nominations 

(AP) – The Maine Senate has confirmed three moreof Gov. Paul LePage Cabinet nominations, including one that stirreddebate over the candidate’s qualifications. None of the 35 senators voted against the appointments ofWilliam Beardsley as conservation commissioner or Normal Olsen asmarine resources commissioner. But nine senators – far short of the two-thirds needed – votedTuesday to override a committee recommendation to confirm PhilipCongdon as commissioner of the Department of Economic and CommunityDevelopment. Assistant Senate Democratic Leader Justin Alfond of Portlandsaid there are “major gaps” in Congdon’s resume. Congdon is anengineer with decades of business management with such firms asTexas Instruments. Republicans defended his qualifications and said he reflects thenew direction of Gov. Paul LePage’s administration.
