Governor LePage moved two steps closer to completing his cabinet appointments on Monday. This morning he named his nominees to run the Departments of Transportation and Corrections.LePage has picked David Bernhardt to head up the MDOT. Berhardt is currently Director of Engineering and Operations for the MDOT. “My first job will be to look at for effective solutions so we can meet the demand of our transportation system in the future without having to raise the gas tax,” Bernhardt told reporters on Monday. The Governor has chosen Joseph Ponte to head the Department of Corrections. Ponte has served as warden of two different prisons in Massachusetts and Tennessee. The Governor says Maine spends too much money on inmates. “If you compare Maine to many other states we spend far more per capita for prison inmates than they do around the country and I don’t understand why that’s the case,” LePage said. “Prison should not be a country club.”These two nominations will still need to be confirmed by lawmakers. LePage has now named 11 of his 15 department heads.
