One Killed, Two Injured in Unity Township Wreck

A woman from Benton was killed and two people were injured when a car and a pickup truck crashed head-on in Unity Township. Kennebec County Sheriff Deputies and the Unity Fire Department were called to Route 139, also known as the Unity Road, about 9 o’clock Wednesday morning. Authorities say 36-year-old Jessica Eldridge was heading east while the driver of the truck, 20-year-old David Kimberlain of Windham, was going the opposite direction. Deputies say Kimberlain lost control when he rounded a curve, then overcorrected, crossed the center line and crashed into Eldridge’s car. Eldridge was killed. Kimberlain broke his leg. His passenger received facial injuries. Sheriff Randall Liberty says even though it was slushy outside, that part of the road was clear and the accident appears to have been avoidable.Investigators are still trying to figure out an exact cause. Corporal Mike Pion with the Sheriff’s Office says, “It’s hard to say right now. We’re just in the preliminary part of the investigation for that right now.”Kimberlain and his passenger were treated at the hospital and released.Liberty says he’ll determine whether charges should be filed in a couple of days.
