NAACP Says LePage Not Being Truthful

The state director of the NAACP says Governor LePage is not telling the truth about an exchange that led to some controversial remarks made by the Governor last week. After turning down an invitation to attend a prison forum during last year’s campaign LePage said the NAACP only wanted him to meet with black prisoners. The Governor said last week that he told the NAACP he would attend if he could meet with all prisoners, not just black prisoners, but LePage said that wasn’t good enough for the organization. The state director of the NAACP says that is not true, the meeting was never supposed to be with just black prisoners. When the Governor was asked about it today he said this. “That’s last week’s news and I’m moving on and I have no more comments on anything to do with that issue.”The Governor did attend a Martin Luther King day breakfast in Waterville Monday morning. He had previously turned down invitations to attend similar events in Orono and Portland which sparked the controversy last week.
