Maine Loggers Protecting Water Quality

A new study says Maine loggers are doing a good job using forest management techniques that protect water quality. The Maine Forest Service Report looks at 500 randomly selected harvest sites between 2005 and 2009.It shows that loggers used the techniques known as “best management practices” at 84 percent of timber harvest sites to prevent sediment from entering water bodies. Best management practices include things like using culverts, bridges and grading roads.
