As partygoers ring in the new year, public transportation services want you to be safe.Joe McNeil, Director of the Bat Bus service says if you’re too drunk to drive, give them a call. “It keeps people from driving around and that’s a good thing and it’s just convenient, it gives people something fun to do.”The Bat shuttle bus will begin operating free services at 6 o’clock. It will pick people up at nine different stops in downtown Bangor ever half hour until midnight. “It’s very steady, there’s always a constant flow of people going from one place to another.”The Bat Bus isn’t the only business that wants to help drivers. Butch Foss with Union Street Towing says all of his drivers will be on staff on its busiest night of the year.”Give us a call Bangor, Brewer area we pick you and your car up take you home no questions asked that’s how easy it is.”Taxi services also have everyone working on New Year’s Eve night.Dispatcher Bob Young with Dick’s Taxi says after the stroke of midnight, taxi’s will serve up to 200 people in an hours span but don’t put the brakes on your effort to try to get a ride.”Usually all the lines are busy so you just gotta keep trying.”With drunk driving the leading cause of fatal car accidents, Young and others hope more people will call for a ride, long after the New Year’s Eve celebrations end.
