Folks in Eastport will ring in the New Year with the help of a huge sardine. The Great Sardine and Maple Leaf Drop is set for Friday night. The oversized fish and leaf were both created by an area artist out of wood and canvas. The Maple Leaf – a nod to Canadian counterparts – will be lowered from the Tides Institute and Museum of Art building at 11 p.m. or midnight Atlantic time. The Sardine will drop at midnight Eastern time. Organizers say area restaurants will be offering food and entertainment specials.Last year more than 300 New Year’s Eve revelers took part in the celebration.
