The Associated Press Lists Top Stories of the Year

The Associated Press has named the November election that brought Republicans to power in Augusta as Maine’s top story for 2010. When Paul LePage takes office on Jan. 5, it’ll mark the first time since the 1960s that the GOP has held the governor’s seat while also wielding majority control in both chambers of the Maine Legislature. The runner up in the AP’s year-end survey was Maine voters’ approval of the first casino with both table games and slot machines, to be built Oxford. The No. 3 story was another referundum in June, when voters rejected a tax overhaul that would have lowered state income tax rates while placing new taxes on dozens of everyday purchases ranging from car repairs to movie tickets to dry cleaning.
