Pingree, Michaud Reject ‘Don’t Ask’ Policy

Democratic Reps. Chellie Pingree and Mike Michaud of Maine have voted to repeal the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy that prevented gays from serving openly in the military. Pingree and Michaud joined the majority in the 250-175 vote Wednesday. Democratic leaders in the Senate say they are committed to bringing the bill to the floor before Congress adjourns. Pingree cited a Pentagon study that said allowing gay men and women to serve openly would have no adverse effect on readiness in units. She said it’s time to recognize that “just because someone is gay, doesn’t make them any less of a solider, sailor, airman or Marine.” Michaud said the House has “now voted twice to repeal this discriminatory policy, and I urge the Senate to finally do the same.” (AP)
