Land Deal to Buy or Save 5k Acres of Land

State officials have reached an agreement to buy more than 5,000 acres in northern Maine from conservationist Roxanne Quimby in a deal that will keep the land as working forest and maintain public access for recreation. Alan Stearns of the Department of Conservation says that Quimby has agreed to sell the land north of Millinocket Lake, near Baxter State Park, for $2.1 million. Additionally, the state has secured conservation easements onanother nearby 2,850 acres for $500,000. The state’s Land for Maine’s Future program is paying $760,000 toward the purchase price, with the rest covered by the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Quimby has bought up vast parcels of Maine woodlands since selling her Burt’s Bees personal care products business. (AP)
