Police Officers Wait Tables to Raise Money for Special Olympics 

Law enforcement officers gave a new meaning to “Serve and Protect” on Thursday night.Officers from several police departments waited tables for Special Olympics of Maine.”Tip a Cop” was held at the Ground Round restaurant in Bangor.All of the tip donations benefited the Law Enforcement Torch Run, an event that raises money for the Special Olympics of Maine.The run began in 1985 and to date, has raised more than a million dollars for the organization.”I’ve had the opportunity to be a part of the ceremonies, hand out awards and be a volunteer at the games and the athletes both young and old really love the law enforcement participation in the program,” said Doug Smith, a police officer with the Bangor Police Department who waited tables at the event.Throughout the year, the police departments host various fundraisers to benefit Special Olympics Maine.
