Lawmakers First Day in Augusta

(AP) – Maine has a new Legislature – and its first Republican-led House and Senate in more than three decades. Gov. John Baldacci on Wednesday administered the oath of office to the new members of the House and Senate who were elected nearly a month ago. In doing so, Baldacci told members of the 125th Maine Legislature to leave the elections behind as they advance the interests of the state. Baldacci, a Democrat, will be succeeded by Republican Gov.-elect Paul LePage, who will be inaugurated in early January. Lawmakers also unanimously elected Republicans Kevin Raye of Perry as Senate president and Rep. Robert Nutting of Oakland as House speaker. In a traditional show of bipartisanship, their nominations were seconded by Democratic floor leaders. (Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
