Maine Women’s Basketball Struggles to Warm Up in Loss to Navy 

It started out as the Downeast Classic in 1987. UMaine Women’s basketball won two of the six tournaments. For the last 18 years its been called the Dead River Classic. Some of the nations top teams have come to Orono for the event. Tonight, the Black Bears hosting Navy and their assistant coach Julie Veilleux who played at UMaine from 2000 to 2004.It was 20-17 Navy at the half. Early second half, Brittany Williams hits the three from the corner. The Black Bears fighting to stay in it.But the Maine shooters were cold all night long. The Black Bears struggling to hit shots on good looks.And on the other side, Navy hit 60 percent of their shots in the second half. Navy wins 65 to 43. Maine will play in the consolation game tomorrow at Noon from the Alfond.For Black Bear head coach Cindy Blodgett, the Dead River Classic is a good time to catch up with old friends of the Black Bear program.
