”My Grandpa’s in the water, and they came over and put a line around me and hauled me into that boat.”It’s a moment Lester Drisko will never forget. When his eight year old grandson, Mathew, rescued him after he fell out of his boat during a fishing trip.”He said ‘Bamp, there’s a boat over there’ and I said if you don’t take my boat and go get that boat I ain’t going to make it.”But he did make it. Mathew drove his grandfather’s boat to get help from nearby fishermen. More than a year later, the Coast Guard wants to make sure he gets the recognition he deserves.Mathew was awarded the Coast Guard’s Certificate of Valor for the courage he demonstrated that day. He is just one of only sixteen people, nationwide, to receive it.As someone who just loves his grandfather, or Bamp as Mathew calls him, it’s not the award that makes him feel like a hero.”When people talk about me at school and stuff.”People will probably be talking about it for a long time, though. Including the man who owes him his life.”He’ll always be my hero. Always.
