Jackson Lab Breaks Ground on New Energy Plant

The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor is breaking ground on a new energy plant it says is the first of its kind in the U.S. The biomedical research institution is holding a groundbreaking ceremony Monday for its new $4.4 million biomass plant that will replace the oil-burning heating system it now employs. Jackson Lab officials say the plant will burn sustainably harvested wood pellets produced by Maine suppliers. The laboratory received a $1 million grant last winter from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative to help pay for the project, which is scheduled to be completed in early spring. (AP)
