Food Cupboard Gives Away Turkeys in Southern Piscataquis County 

A food cupboard in Dover-Foxcroft is also helping folks get ready for Thanksgiving.On Friday, they gave away free turkeys to more than 180 people.The food cupboard set up a truck at the Shaw’s on Main Street and collected turkeys from the store’s customers.Pastor Thomas Bruce of the Living Word Assembly of God says in just two weeks, they collected three hundred turkeys.Donna and Galen goodreau are a couple who TV 5 met at the drive. They have lived in Maine most of their lives.The couple are both unemployed and currently living on social security.As bills continue to pile up, they say times are tough but thanks to the living word food cupboard, they’re able to put food on the table.”Everybody is so nice you know, you talk with them and they’re happy to have something that helps us,” Donna said.With Thanksgiving right around the corner, they’ll have a turkey for the big feast.”It’s a wonderful feeling, it really is,” she said.The Living Word Food Cupboard collected more than 300 turkeys in less than two weeks. Customers donated the birds at the Shaw’s grocery store on Main Street.Pastor Thomas Bruce arrived at 8 in the morning to begin giving them away. “This is the time I get personally with people and giving out the turkeys, I love it, I live for this.”The cupboard has been giving away turkeys for fourteen years and currently assists more than 600 people in southern Piscataquis County.When the turkey drive first began, they gave away 75. since then, that number continues to rise.”We were feeding 130 families a week, and just last week, we fed 161 families in one day in Dover and 151 families in the Dover Milo area.”Their commitment to the community is something Donna and Galen are thankful for.”It’s a really great community, couldn’t ask for a better one,” she said.
