House Democrats Elect Cain as Leader

(AP) – Now a minority in Maine’s House of Representatives for the first time in three decades, Democrats have chosen their floor leaders for the upcoming two-year session, with promises to return in two years as a majority once again. For minority leader, the Democrats chose Rep. Emily Cain of Orono over Rep. Seth Berry of Bowdoinham and Cynthia Dill of Cape Elizabeth. Cain, who’s served for the last two years as Appropriations Committee co-chair, pledged to help rebuild her party’s numbers. In the race for assistant leader or whip, Rep. Teresa Hayes of Buckfield defeated Reps. Michael Carey of Lewiston, and Sharon Treat of Hallowell. Votes earlier this month put Republicans in charge of the House for the first time since the 1972 election. (Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
