Veazie Residents Could Vote on Police Grant

At least one person in Veazie wants voters to decide whether the town should use federal money to hire an extra police officer. The police department was recently awarded more than $150,000 to put another cop on the force. The grant would fund the position for three years, then the town would pick up the tab for the fourth year. But a majority of town leaders has turned down the idea – first, in a vote two weeks ago. Then, again, last night when town manager Bill Reed says councilors made no move to accept the grant. Reed says today a resident told the town office she wants to circulate a petition to call a vote on the issue. Reed says the town has until December 30th to accept or reject the grant money.
