Orrington to Receive $1.5M for Contaminated HoltraChem Land 

The town of Orrington is selling up to 30 acres of contaminated land at the former HoltraChem site to the company responsible for cleaning it up. In exchange, Orrington will receive $1.5 million to redevelop the rest of the 235 acre site.Town manager Paul White says the money can also be used for other development projects in Orrington. Under the agreement, the Mallinckrodt company will make three, $500,000 dollars payments.The first is due December 1 and White says it will be put into a reserve fund until town leaders determine how to spend it.This summer the Board of Environmental Protection issued a decision on Mallinckrodt should clean up mercury and toxins from the former chemical company.The company is appealing that order.
