Young Voters Hope To Interact With Gubernatorial Candidates

Next week, all 5 candidates vying to become the next Governor of Maine are scheduled to face off in a forum you’ll se right here on TV 5.With help from Prepare Maine, an initiative that advocates for excellence in education, many of the questions will come from students.Next week, students at MCI in Pittsfield will have the opportunity to practice their civic duty. Something teacher Jason Allen says is familiar territory.”A couple of years ago our school theme for the year was citizenship during the 2008 election, a big part of what we did was a mock election and that was pretty successful, so having the opportunity to do it again here and be involved with the gubernatorial election seemed like a natural fit.”MCI is one of several schools that will serve as satellite sites, making the gubernatorial forum available to students. Students will also be able to test their knowledge about the candidates with Election Jeopardy. After the debate is broadcast, students will be able to ask candidates questions through Facebook about the issues that matter to them.”Immigration, I would like to see their opinion on immigration and how they would go about it.”Student Sammy Jachagea says he’s honored to have the opportunity to learn about politics. The Kenyan native is interested in seeing how American government works.”I’d really like to see how American politicians work and how they go about their campaigns.”Cody Theis will be representing the student body at the forum. Even though the two students aren’t of age to vote, they believe it’s important to be aware of the issues for when they can.”Even if you can’t vote now, it’s good to know what’s going on so you can base you opinion later when you can.”The Prepare Maine Gubernatorial Forum, with partners WABI and the Maine Coalition for Excellence in Education, will air next Wednesday night here on TV5, from 7 to 8:30pm.The forum will be held at Peakes Auditorium at Bangor High School. It’s free to attend, but you do need a ticket. For ticket information, log onto prepare maine.event brite.com.
