Washington County leaders met Friday in Machias to discuss budget cuts. Washington County Commission Chair Chris Gardner says the shortfall will be at least a 6-hundred thousand dollars. Gardner says they’ve had a good run for the past five years, but a lot of things they need to invest in now are due all at once. He says it looks like the county tax will rise, but he doesn’t know how much. He says they’re looking at ways to cut staff. ” Those are tremendous decisions we have to try and make because it affects people’s lives. We pride ourselves on trying to run a pretty lean ship here and we have for some time but we’ve gotten to a point where we have to find a way to make cuts even more further.”The commissioners are expected to meet again next month.
