Governor Rides the Rails

(AP) – It’s all-aboard for Gov. John Baldacci, who’s spending the day checking out rail projects in Maine. On Friday, he joined state officials, major shippers, and officials for Pan Am Railways, St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railroad and the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority to tour four significant rail projects by train. Baldacci, who’s not running for re-election, described the investments in rail infrastructure “critical to strengthening our entire economy.” The tour began in Waterville at Pan Am facilities where locomotives are repaired. Other stops included a ribbon cutting of the Danville Junction Gateway Project in Auburn, Pan Am crews installing new rail for the Downeaster expansion to Brunswick and finally Rigby Yard in South Portland.
