Bangor now boasts the highest crime rate in the state – thanks to a spike in property crimes, such as burglaries ands thefts. Statistics from the Department of Public Safety show in 2009, Bangor’s crime rate was nearly three times as high as the average for cities and towns with more than 10-thousand people. The figures show there were 71.6 crimes per 1,000 Bangor residents. The average in the state is 25.34 crimes. The numbers also show Bangor’s crime rate has continued to climb in recent years. In 2005, it was as 51.65 crimes per 1,000 people. Police chief Ron Gastia says a number of factors are contributing to the increase and its hard to place the blame on just one of them.
