Family owned and operated Whitney Wreath held an open house Thursday at its new facility in Machias.Diana Bosch got a tour of the building that will begin production on its wreaths just in time for the holiday season.”Oh this is a fabulous thing, this is something new for Machias and it’s a big operation,” said resident Flora Palosky.Palosky was one of many who toured Whitney Wreath’s newest manufacturing facility in Machias.Whitney Wreath has been supplying fresh, balsam wreaths for the past 25 years.CEO David Whitney says the new building will help them produce wreaths in a more efficient manner using cutting edge technology.”We have our own expansive wreath machine that we also have the most efficient drop-ship facility in the world,” he said.On a busy day during the holiday season, the company will produce up to 18 UPS trailers full of wreaths. The 70,000 square foot building features production rooms designed to create wreaths for its largest accounts all under one roof. “In the past we had up to 9 locations and at best that’s difficult to manage and run efficiently, it puts all the wreath production into one roof,” said General Manager Kevin Mitchell.Mitchell says the building will put more than 200 people to work. The facility took 207 days to build and will also serve as the company’s corporate headquarters.Whitney says he is proud his company continues to grow during these tough economic times.”It’s fantastic, we’re growing at a time when things aren’t and it feels really good to put people to work.”
