Bar Harbor Rooming House Residents Safe Following Fire 

Fire destroyed a three-story rooming house in Bar Harbor overnight, but all of the residents were safe Wednesday morning, thanks in part to the quick thinking actions of local police officers.The call from Roberts Square came in around 11:40 Tuesday night. There were reports of people trapped inside the burning home.When police officers arrived, the second floor was already engulfed in flames.Officer Eric McLaughlin tells TV 5 he could hearing people screaming inside.Police saw a man standing on the second floor porch. They were able to get him down safely.Then, they heard about another man, trapped on the third floor.Officer McLaughlin says they were able to locate a nearby ladder, hoisted it up to the third floor window and pulled the victim, 52-year-old Andy Urqhardt, out.He was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and minor injuries, and is said to be doing okay as of Wednesday morning.All of the other residents inside were able to make it out safely.We’re told the rooming house is for employees of Testa’s Restaurant.The Fire Marshal’s office will now investigate a cause.
