Sunday was October 10th, 2010 or 10-10-10. In honor of the date, the Belfast Area Transition Initiative hosted a day of various work projects to get folks to dig in and get their hands dirty.Numerous businesses got together and visited educational centers, learning about electric cars, off grid living and swapping out grass of natural, low maintenance plants. The goal is to get citizens involved in encouraging state and national legislators to pass climate change legislation.” They can get involved at the local level and actually bring about some change at the local level which is where it has to start,” said Chuck Piper, with the Belfast Area Transition Initiative.Organizers say they also are encouraging folks to buy local. They say buying local will help the environment because less trucks will be traveling through to bring goods here.
