War Remains Investigation

Police in Maine are looking for a man who mailed human remains to the Japanese consulate in New York with a note saying the remains were from a World War II serviceman and needed to be given a proper burial in Japan. Belfast Police Sgt. Bryan Cunningham said the search is not a criminal matter. He says the Japanese authorities need more information before they can accept the remains. Cunningham says an anonymous note said the sender felt the remains were those of a soldier who fought for his country and deserved a decent burial. The sender said the remains came from the Pacific Island nowcalled Palau. The remains were mailed from Belfast on September 7th. (AP)
