Holden Fire

An elderly woman has been sent to the hospital following a fire in her apartment in Holden Thursday afternoon.Crews responded to a fire at the Holden Square Apartments just before 1 pm.The fire was contained to just one apartment on the second floor. We’re told 80-year-old Thelma Sweet was burned and was taken to the hospital where she is currently in stable condition. The building has about 30 apartments and many occupants are elderly. They all had to be evacuated.Holden and Eddington Fire Chief, Jim Ellis, says quick response time and their pre-emergency plan helped them contain the fire in a short time.” It was huge. We have no municipal hydrants out there. We have a small brook down the road. For years we’ve pre-planned this facility. We’ve actually laid hose from the stream. We’ve extended hose lines into the building to the second floor to identify what our options could be.”Mutual aid from Dedham, Eddington, Orrington and Brewer also assisted.Ellis said they were in hopes to get the other residents back into their apartments Thursday afternoon. The Fire Marshal’s Office has been called in to investigate.
