Proposal to Add Sturgeon to Endangered List

There’s a proposal to list sturgeon in the Gulf of Maine as endangered. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the proposal calls for listing sturgeon as endangered in the Chesapeake Bay, New York area and in the Carolinas. An endangered listing bans the killing, collecting, even the pursuit of species so listed.Sturgeon are slowly reproducing fish, which can live 100 years and weigh hundreds of pounds. They were once abundant along the east coast and sought after for their salty eggs, but were nearly driven to extinction by the caviar industry at the end of the 19th century.
