Maine Taxpayers Pay More According to Latest Report

A nonpartisan think tank says Maine taxpayers pay more than the national averages for local and state government programs. Envision Maine also says Maine could save more than $1 billion if the state could find a way to bring the costs for welfare, health care and corrections in line with national averages. The report, co-produced by the nonprofit GrowSmart, was released Wednesday. The report says Mainers spend about 13 percent more of their incomes for state and local government than the national average, and 16 percent more than similar rural states. It also says Maine pays 69 percent more for welfare and Medicaid than the national average, and more than the national average in other categories. (AP)
