An icon in the town of Southwest Harbor. That’s how folks are describing 61-year-old Pete Peterson. Peterson has been missing since the middle of last week.Authorities say he was last seen Friday hitchhiking in Ellsworth toward Mount Desert Island.Peterson is 6’1 and is balding. Police say he walks with a limp and has a lazy eye. Peterson is autistic. Carolyn Dyer has been his caretaker for eight years and says this is out of character for him. ” Well we think the world of Pete. We all do at the library, he’s our family. He loves reading, loves horses. He’s just a good guy, has a good heart and really cares about people.” ” We’re still being optimistic and we still have some leads coming in that we’re following up on. People have reported seeing him throughout the state and out of state. We did do a search on Monday in a local area here in Southwest Harbor with negative results. But we’re continuing to search other areas.”They say Peterson was last seen wearing blue jeans, possibly a grey hooded sweatshirt and brown shoes.Anyone with information is asked to call Southwest Harbor police at 244-7912.
