(AP) – The Maine National Guard Foundation has received a $300,000 gift that will go toward helping military members and their families in Maine during difficult times. Maj. Gen. John Libby and Gov. John Baldacci announced Tuesday that the foundation has accepted the funds from the estate of Anna Doby, a Cape Elizabeth resident who died last year. The governor said Doby and her late husband, Dr. Tibor Doby, left Hungary after participating in the failed 1956 revolt against the Soviet-controlled Hungarian government. They eventually settled in Maine, where Tibor Doby served as chief of radiology at Mercy Hospital in Portland. Baldacci said the Doby’s left the gift to the Maine National Guard Foundation because of their appreciation for the freedom they found in the U.S. after having lived through oppression in Hungary.
