Late-Night Television Goes Local with “The Nite Show” on TV5

Late night television is about to get a lot more local. Starting next month, a revived version of “The Nite Show with Danny Cashman” will air Saturday nights, right here on TV5. Old Town native Dan Cashman says it’s time to bring the show back and make people laugh. It was last seen in 2002 and modeled after other big names, like Johnny Carson and David Letterman. “But with local guests, local attempts at comedy, local music, very much a local feel – 99 percent of the show every week will be local.”The show will be taped before a live audience at the Next Generation Theatre in Brewer – and produced by students from the New England School of Communications. Cashman says it’s a chance to highlight area talent and feature relatively unknown Mainers. “Johnny Carson made people very, very famous for very little things that they did just because they were interesting. Nobody had heard of the Piedmont Bird Callers outside of Piedmont before Johnny Carson. And even now, David Letterman brings them back every year. So that’s another intent is to get people that have interesting stories.”TV5 program director Steve Hiltz says the format of the Nite Show fits right in with the station’s commitment to the community. “There was a time when shows like this were a staple for TV stations and times have changed. It’s a lot harder to see something local from your community, people that you know or want to know and I think this probably is unique.”Cashman says the new version of the show has been in the works for about a year and is nearly ready to go.”We’re within two weeks of our first taping date and so far, we have no material. So I feel pretty good about that. We’re hoping to have some material by the time we tape.”Cashman adds, “I just try to make people laugh, whether it’s with us or at us – we’ll do our best.”The Nite Show begins with a special preview show on Saturday, October 9th, at 11:30 p.m on TV5. It will also air at midnight in Portland on WPME-TV.The guest line up and information on how to attend a taping will soon be available on-line at
