Company Appeals Cleanup Plan for Former HoltraChem Site

The company in charge of cleaning up mercury and other toxins at the former HoltraChem facility in Orrington is appealing part of the plan put together by the state. Mallinckrodt officials disagree with the Board of Environmental Protection’s decision to require the company to completely remove two of the five landfills. The BEP approved that plan last month.Company spokesperson JoAnna Schooler says the company wants to move forward with the majority of the plan, including removing Landfill #1.But she says the company continues to oppose removing a second landfill, saying it could expose people to harmful air emissions. Schooler say the company is ready to work with the town on the parts of the cleanup that are in agreement with the state. We’re told the appeal process could take up to a year in Superior Court.
