Gentlemen’s Club Proposal Getting Attention in Madison

The Madison Planning Board will discuss whether or not a building permit for a gentlemen’s club will be granted. However, town manager, Norman Dean says it will be difficult for the board to decide anything until more details are outlined in the application. The application was submitted by Ernest and Shannon George, of Madison. TV5 News tried to contact the couple to get more information, but our call was not returned. Currently, the town has an obscenity ordinance that bans sexual exploitation. The purpose of the ordinance indicates, “To prohibit certain acts of commercial exploitation of human sexuality in commercial or business establishments within the Town of Madison in order to reduce the likelihood of criminal activity, moral degradation, sexually transmitted diseases and disturbances of the peace and good order of the community which may occur when such commercial exploitation is permitted in such places.” Town officials have turned to the Maine Municipal Association for legal advice on the matter. The George’s have hired an attorney as well. The planning board is expected to discuss the issue on Tuesday, September 21.
