Judge Dismisses Sears Island Lawsuits

A judge has tossed out three lawsuits filed by environmentalists opposed to development plans for Sears Island. The complaints argued that the 300 acres set aside on the island to be used for transportation projects would damage the area. The rest of the island, about 600 acres, is to be protected from development.Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Hjelm dismissed the suits, saying the plantiffs have not been hurt because there are no plans to use the land yet. The mostly likely scenario would be to expand the port at Searport, into Sears Island.A spokesperson for the Transportation Department, though, says there are no requests to do that right now.
