Maine Parents in the Dark About Underage Alcohol Use

A new report shows most parents in Maine under-estimate how much alcohol their high school aged children drink. The Maine office of substance abuse says a recent survey of teenagers and a separate statewide phone survey of parents reveals a large gap between what parents think their children drink and what the teens report. In the survey 65% of Maine high school teens said they’ve had a least one drink and more than 20% said they had engaged in binge drinking. But in the phone survey, only 26% of parents said they believed their high-school aged children had ever had more than a few sips of alcohol, and less than 2% believed their children had engaged in binge drinking.
