Organizers of a food pantry in Hermon hope a huge yard sale Saturday will move them closer to their goal of building a headquarters. The Neighbors Supporting Neighbors food pantry feeds more than 400 people in Hermon, Carmel, Levant, Etna and Dixmont. It operates out of a temporary site – the Penobscot Snowmobile Club – with food stored elsewhere. The town of Hermon recently donated land on the Billings Road for a new facility, which would house a food pantry and soup kitchen. It’ll also include a 3-bed emergency shelter.Director Carol Lackedy says, “It’ll be a shelter for housing people who’ve had a fire. And you see it on the news everyday. It’s not just during the wintertime a fire might happen. And if a family needs a place to stay they can stay right here in the Hermon area instead of being housed somewhere farther away from where their children might go to school.”Organizers hope Saturday’s yard sale will collect about $2,000 for the new facility. It starts at 10 a.m. at the Brewer Eagle’s Club on 22 Atlantic Avenue. It’s $5 to get in and that covers the cost of all you can carry out in your arms. Volunteers say the sale will keeping going until everything’s gone.
