Late Drama As Maine Field Hockey Beats Michigan

The big sports day at UMaine started with a field hockey game against Michigan this afternoon and will end with the season opening football game against Albany tonight. Tim Throckmorton is hanging out on his old college campus and has both stories. We’ll start with football. The UMaine team opens its season against Albany. Maine is ranked 22nd in the nation and to be honest its a game that they’re supposed to win. Running back Jared Turcotte is back after missing all of last year with an injury. There are so many things we can do as an offence with me and Session and Warren starting at QB. And I don’t think teams can defend everything we do.The goals are always lofty… win the conference…. make the playoffs. We always prefer to look at it that way what’s the upside of everything each and every year has an upside of optimism. It starts with attitude and effort and I know I’m proud of that on this football team.Kickoff is at 7:00.Now to the field hockey game. One of the captains at Michigan, Zara Saydjari… one of the captains at Maine Courtney Veinotte. They were on the same field for the first time since they played together at Skowhegan high school.I’m very excited I think this is probably one of the biggest highlights of Zara’s and my career is playing here at Maine.Michigan scored early in the 2nd half but maine tied it up with 20 minutes to play. Kelly Newton dribles in and scores unassisted to even the game at one.It stayed that way until the final :30 seconds. This time a beautiful goal from Kallie Aldus and UMaine walks away with a 2-1 win over Big 10 Michigan.
