Sugarloaf Announces Plans For Major Expansion 

Maine’s Sugarloaf ski area is planning to more than double the amount of skiable terrain it has by expanding onto adjacent Burnt Mountain. Officials say once the skiable area has grown from 651 acres to1,306 acres Sugarloaf will become the largest ski resort east ofthe Rocky Mountains. Vermont’s Killington ski area is now thelargest. Sugarloaf General Manager John Diller says skiers have looked atBurnt Mountain since shortly after Sugarloaf first opened 60 yearsago. Officials say no traditional ski trails will be cut on BurntMountain. Instead, the mountain will offer skiers a backcountry, or”side-country,” experience. The expansion is expected to takethree to six years. The first phase is expected to be completedthis winter. (AP)
