Wind Turbine Producing in Southwest Harbor

A power-producing wind turbine has been raised at the coast guard station in Southwest Harbor. The 70-foot wind turbine will provide power to coast guard housing. It’s positioned to take advantage of the prevailing winds that carve through the housing site. “We want to be good stewards of the environment and we want to be careful how we spend tax payers dollars, but we also think the debate is over whether we need to go alternative energy,” Said Jim McPherson with the U.S. Coast Guard. “We need to do that, we need to explore that. We’re glad to do that here.”The turbine begins making power with eight miles per hour wind speed and the Coast Guard says they’re hopeful the electricity generated will cover a large percentage of their power needs, especially during windy, winter months.
