Local Bank Teaming Up With Bangor Public Library To Help Kids
A bank with locations primarily in Aroostook County is opening a new location in Bangor. That’s good news for the local library. The Katahdin Trust Company has more than a dozen locations, mostly in northern Maine. At a luncheon in Bangor, they announced they’re opening a new location in the Broadway Shopping Plaza. “It’s a great market. You know it’s the business center for this part of Maine and we really feel good about being here,” says President & CEO of the Katahdin Trust Company, Jon Prescott. On hand to welcome them to Bangor were representatives from the Bangor Public Library, who are partnering with the bank on the “Reading Buddies” program. “Reading Buddies, we’re going to ask adults to volunteer to come to the library once a week and read to a child one-on-one. read their favorite stories,” says Library Director Barbara McDade. The Katahdin Trust Company will donate $25 for every new account opened at their new Broadway location, up to $10,000 to the Reading Buddies program. “It’s a great program,” says Prescott. “It’s a win-win situation for them and us. We wanted to make a positive impact with whatever we did when we came here.” McDade says some people stop reading to their kids when they get to be a few years old. “Well you know how important it is to read to little kids. What studies have found is that it’s really important to read to kids up to 8th grade.”Volunteers will be paired with the same children every week. They hope the kids will form a bond with their own personal volunteer reading their favorite classics to them.Rebecca Henderson volunteers with the program. She brings along a couple of friends, Reece and Atticus. She says kids have started reading to the dogs. “They just love it. They run towards them and they’re like dogs!! And they start reading their favorite stories to them,” she says.Volunteering for Reading Buddies is simple. You can fill out an application at the Bangor Public Library.
